The basics

What is the Annual Enrollment Period?

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is a yearly window, October 15 through December 7, when people with Medicare can review their coverage and make changes for the year ahead. Changes you make during AEP generally take effect on January 1.

It’s a normal, recurring part of how Medicare works. Plans can change their costs and coverage from one year to the next, so AEP is simply the time set aside to look things over.

Your options

What you can change during AEP

Switch between Original Medicare and Advantage

Move from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, or the other way around.

Change Medicare Advantage plans

Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.

Join, switch, or drop Part D

Add a Part D prescription drug plan, change plans, or drop coverage.

Keep what you have

If your current plan still fits, you don’t have to change anything at all.

Worth a look each year

Why an annual plan review matters

Even if you’re happy with your coverage, a yearly review can be worthwhile. Here’s why:

Plans change

Premiums, copays, drug formularies, and provider networks can be updated each year.

Your needs change

New prescriptions, new doctors, or a move can affect which plan fits best.

Costs add up

Small differences in premiums or drug coverage can matter over a full year.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

When is the Annual Enrollment Period?

It runs from October 15 through December 7 each year. Changes you make generally take effect on January 1.

Do I have to make a change during AEP?

No. AEP is an opportunity to review your coverage, not a requirement to change it. If your current plan still fits, you can keep it.

What’s the difference between AEP and Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment?

AEP (October 15 – December 7) is open to everyone with Medicare. Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment (January 1 – March 31) is for people already in a Medicare Advantage plan who want to make a one-time change.
