Medigap Plan G vs. Plan N: Which Is Right for You?
Comparing Medigap Plan G and Plan N? See how their coverage and costs differ in plain English — and get help choosing. No pressure.
If you’re looking at Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans, two of the most popular options are Plan G and Plan N. Because Medigap plans are standardized, the core benefits of each are the same no matter which company sells them — so this really comes down to coverage trade-offs and price.
First, how Medigap works
Medigap plans work alongside Original Medicare to help pay some of the out-of-pocket costs — like copays, coinsurance, and deductibles — that Parts A and B leave behind. They’re standardized by plan letter, so a Plan G offers the same core benefits across carriers; what differs is the premium and the company.
Plan G — comprehensive coverage
Plan G is one of the most comprehensive options for new enrollees. It covers many of the out-of-pocket costs Original Medicare leaves, after you pay the annual Part B deductible. People who want predictable costs and minimal surprises often look at Plan G.
Plan N — lower premium, some cost-sharing
Plan N often comes with a lower monthly premium than Plan G, in exchange for some cost-sharing — such as small copays for certain office and emergency visits. People comfortable with a bit of cost-sharing in return for a lower premium often consider Plan N.
How to choose
Think about whether you’d rather pay a higher premium for fewer out-of-pocket costs (Plan G) or a lower premium with some copays (Plan N) — and compare the actual premiums available to you for each, since the benefits are standardized. Remember Medigap doesn’t include drug coverage, so you’d add a Part D plan.
